HELP PROTECT THIS RENT-STABILIZED BUILDING FROM BEING CONVERTED INTO A HOTEL!

The Los Angeles Department of City Planning needs to hear your voice in support of the residential zoning of the 58-unit Ellison Apartments in Venice. Property owner Lance Robbins is appealing the City's decision that The Ellison is and always has been zoned for residential use not commercial use. Over the past several years The Ellison at 15 Paloma Avenue has been stealthily converted into a non-permitted, unlicensed and unregulated short-term hotel. This de facto hotel has removed 48 affordable housing units (except for 10 longterm tenants hanging on) and replaced Venice locals with a never ending flood of strangers.

Robbins is now asking the City to legalize this unlawful activity by granting his appeal to convert the Ellison into commercial use in the midst of an LA housing crisis and permanently remove all 58 apartments from the rental market. We cannot allow this to happen.

Next Hearing:

West Los Angeles Area Planning Commission
Henry Medina West LA Parking Enforcement Facility
11214 W. Exposition Blvd. - 2nd Floor
Los Angeles, CA 90064

Date: May 15, 2019
Time: 4:30 pm

I myself was once a tenant and saw the conversion of the apartment, where a large number of friends and families were able to enjoy each others company. Over the years it changed by adding in a rental office where the mailboxes were located, apartments being remodeled to appease hotel guests, and rents skyrocket year after year. The housing in Venice is decreasing and to remove this property that has a large number of units from the rental market would be a huge blow to the community. The building across the street appears to have already been able to change itself from an apartment into a short term rental building and removed almost all of its tenants. The laws passed to monitor and regulate short term rentals have been side stepped by owners just as this building’s owner has done. Leaving much of the city and agencies useless in the efforts to enforce the law.

Venice needs apartment buildings to house its residents. Let new buildings be hotels, but not the old rent-stabilized apartment buildings.

Los Angeles needs rent stabilization. No one should be forced from their home to create expensive retreats for the wealthy. People need decent, safe housing at affordable rents. Please act responsibly and preserve people’s long-term homes.

The Ellison is a Venice locals mainstay. Many of my neighbors have lived in the Ellison, and the building’s history alone should be enough to stop this travesty of AirBnB from taking it over entirely.

My community is being destroyed in the name of greed. I have lived in Venice and its environs for 35 years and the city has never been “tenant friendly”. Time to change that. STOP THE GREED.

As a person who deeeeeeeeeeply cares about plight of lives disrupted because of greeeeeeeeeeed of forcing them out of their homes, and yes, with years and years of dwelling, it is indeed their homes, I totally support the very very very right action that would allow the Ellison to continue be zoned for residential use.

You must stop allowing apartments and residences to be run as hotels.

This case represents a much much bigger problem that is spreading not only throughout Venice but beyond. The rate of homelessness is increasing every single day, it is quite obvious around the entire city. A problem of epidemic proportions, not only affecting the residents of the Ellison but rather anyone who lives in a rented property. This petition is a statement of collective awareness and action that we are not going away!

I live in a different one of Lance’s buildings it wasnt until very recently, that they are trying to get me and my boyfriend to move out and evict us because they are also trying to turn our building into a hotel as well!!!!!! Our building is a RSO rent control building as well!!!! I fully support and stand by the left over tenants that live at the Ellison building !!!! This is despicable and is contributing to the LA housing crisis and we must take a stand against this.

It’s a shame that this historic building is now a hotel. Current tenants should be compensated for dealing with incompetent landlords.
