URGENT: This case will set a precedent for the 1,000+ Venice Apartments that have been converted to short-term rental units!

With all that's at stake, the voice of Venice must be heard!

Dear Coastal Commissioners and Councilman Bonin:

We recently learned that the Coastal Commission has scheduled the appeal for 2 Breeze Ave. (Venice Breeze Suites) to be heard at their November 2015 meeting in Half Moon Bay, CA. This is the same case that was previously scheduled to be heard in San Diego, and then in Long Beach—both Southern California locations.

This case involves a boardwalk apartment building whose landlord wants to convert 31 rent-controlled apartments into permanent short-term-rental (AirBnB) hotel rooms. This case, whatever the outcome, will be precedent-setting for Venice. Dozens of Venice residents and organizations have written letters regarding the case. Dozens more Venetians have been waiting for months to attend this hearing, and their voices must be heard. The Coastal Commission should hold the hearing for this case in an area that is accessible to everyday Venetians. After months of waiting, however, we have learned that the Coastal Commission has put the 2 Breeze Ave. appeal on the agenda for the upcoming meeting in Half Moon Bay—almost 400 miles away from Venice!

Move the Venice Breeze Suites Hearing back to Southern California!

It is basic common sense that a hearing that deals with property located in Venice and affects primarily citizens of Venice should be held in a location accessible to the interested parties, not Half Moon Bay. Especially such an important hearing. Why would this hearing be scheduled in such an inconvenient location? The Coastal Commission is a public commission, answerable to the citizens it represents (e.g., Venetians) and, seemingly obvious, hearings regarding specific neighborhoods should be held in that neighborhood. Traveling so far is an unnecessary inconvenience and seems to be “suspiciously favorable” to the owners of 2 Breeze. Thank you for your attention and consideration.

There are no neighborhoods without neighbors! Don’t let illegal hotels make Venice all tourists 24/7. Stop the hemoraghing rental units into ILLEGAL HOTELS

I live 1 block from this building. I would like to be able to but my word in at this meeting. If it is 400 miles away that makes it very difficult.
